THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 6061 T6 AND 7075 T6 ALUMINUM. This topic comes up alot in forums. There are still many wondering what the difference is and how does it matter. Understand that both materials have been used in military applications extensively and will get the job done regardless of your choice. You do however need to keep a few other factors in mind.
Lets start with the basics. What do the number mean? Simply, cast alloys are all given code that signifies the type of the composition of the metal. 6061 is made from: Aluminum, Magnesium-Silicon while 7075 is comprised of: Aluminum, Zinc-Magnesium. The T6 part of that identifier code relates to the fact that the material is thermally treated tempered metal and artifically treated. While the code designates the material it also relates to its attributes which should be considered. These attributes include Formability or Workability, Weldability, Machining, Corrosion Resistance, Overall Strength or Resistance to Breaking, and Typical Application. What to expect?
You may pay more for a product manufactured in 7075 T6 Aluminum simply because it costs more to manufacture. It costs more because its more difficult to machine. But that doesnt mean that 6061T6 is bad. 7075 by designation is stronger then 6061 but its strength comes at a cost. 7075 is more difficult to weld, form, machine and is more corrosive then 6061. This also makes detailing and modification more difficult for 7075 compared to 6061. A key factor to consider if your building an 80%. Most handguards are manufactured from 6061 specifically due to the ability to refine it with better detail.
Remember that both are strong and reliable materials designed for different purposes. 6061 is largely used in industrial while 7075 is largely used in aerospace. Keep in mind that paying more doesnt guarantee better quality. Nor does paying less mean poor quality. Its up to the manufacturer or distributor to ensure the craftsmanship on the part regardless of the material used.
So if your Charging Handle, Lower Receiver, 80%, Upper, Handguard ect is made from 6061 don't sweat. Its a reliable material that will serve its purpose well. We recommend utilizing PAMAX Tactical and their products which can be found in both the above material types and are backed by a lifetime warranty.
